Helping People Through Rare Maps, Cigars and Puppies

The Tampa Bay Trust Company recently sponsored their annual fundraiser for Southeastern Guide Dogs in partnership with the J C Newman Cigar Company. Some 90 people attended the intimate event at the cigar company, enjoying food from Columbia Restaurant, excellent hand-rolled cigars and an outstanding bourbon tasting bar. A unique program was featured this year with the help of The Tampa Bay History Center. Rodney Kite-Powell, Director of The Touchton Map Library and Saunders Foundation Curator of History at the center spoke about their amazing collection of rare maps of Florida, the Caribbean, Mexico and South America. Ten beautiful reproductions of some of the center’s most special Florida maps dating back to the early 1500’s were on display in the cigar rolling room and available to own through a silent auction. The history shared about Tampa Bay, the State of Florida and its Gulf of Mexico neighbors was an ideal complement within the walls of the cigar company in Ybor City. Tampa Bay Trust Company CEO, Terry Igo said, “Funds raised during the evening will be applied to training guide and service dog puppies at the Southeastern Guide Dog facility in Palmetto. Our special thanks go to our friends Bobby and Eric Newman for their generosity in hosting the event again this year, and to Rodney for providing a captivating and entertaining presentation, and expounding on the incredible maps the History Center made available.”
