Trust Company Hosts Aging In Place Program

The Sanibel Captiva Trust Company recently hosted the first of their 2020 Speaker Series entitled, “Aging in Place & Long-Term Care.” Andrea Sieradzki, Campus Director of Gulf Coast Village presented on the topic. Gulf Coast Village is one of several senior living family of options in Southwest Florida, under the Volunteers of America umbrella.
Sieradzki noted some serious statistics, such as ten thousand people turn 65 every day in the US, and the fastest growing age group is now 100+ years of age. Southwest Florida has 125,000 seniors over the age of 80. What this means for our residents: Lee County has a shortage of skilled nursing facilities; there is a caregiver shortage; Medicare is short-term and 7 out of 10 (65+ year-olds) will need long term care at some point. Not to mention that healthcare costs rise 5% – 12% annually.
Sieradzki outlined the options. “Older Americans are very likely to need long-term care, but want to stay in their homes, rather than transition to a community,” she said. “We understand that if you live on the beautiful islands of Sanibel and Captiva, you’d want to stay here as long as possible.” She highlighted another company under Volunteers of America, Senior Choice at Home. This in-home care program accepts relatively healthy people beginning at 60 years of age today in anticipation that members will need Senior Choice at Home down the road. A Personal Care Coordinator is partnered with each member to develop and execute a care plan tailored to their needs. “Joining at a younger age helps you create a thorough plan for your future,” said Sieradzki. “There is no time like the present, because today you are as young and healthy as you will ever be.”
